Welding Equipment Rental

IMSI offers a better welding system for rent.

IMSI has been working with utilities, refineries, steel and paper mills and their contractors since 1988. IMSI works with customers who are not satisfied with their weld productivity or quality. By renting field tested systems, welding and labor costs can easily be cut in half!

IMSI Pulsed Arc welding rental equipment will lay down a more uniform deposit with greater accuracy, minimize distortion and waste, all quicker than standard stick, SMAW or conventional MIG welding.

IMSI's welding rental systems achieve these excellent results by optimizing equipment, weld parameters, gas selection and welding wire for each customer application.

Pulsed Arc is applicable and adaptable to most all field situations through the use of IMSI's specially designed pulsed power supply that connects to a portable, compact, lightweight suitcase wire feeder by a standard welding lead. IMSI's power supply creates a more powerful system with higher deposition rates than can be achieved at distances in excess of several hundred feet from the power supply. This suitcasing allows it to be moved through almost any space and makes it ideal for out-of- position and overhead application.

IMSI offers better service.

IMSI is a service-oriented business made up of professional welding engineers who specialize in Pulsed Arc welding. We provide a proven welding process that can be rented for weeks or months (minimum rental period is one week). IMSI backs up their equipment with training and engineering support.

IMSI offers a way to complete your projects faster.

The IMSI process has productivity several times that of SMAW or conventional MIG welding. This increase in productivity is achieved by optimizing the equipment, the weld parameters, the gas selection, and the welding wire for your specific application.

IMSI systems are durable.

IMSI systems are designed to achieve superior operating results in the rigors of the field. The suitcase power supply is portable and lightweight and is compact enough to be moved through almost any space.

IMSI systems come complete with everything you need except the people to do the work!

When IMSI ships a welding system, the system comes with spare parts and a consumables kit. The consumables kit is offered on a consignment basis. You only get billed for items used. IMSI can even arrange for wire and gas provisioning and can supply clients with weld lead, hose, etc. if necessary.

IMSI is responsive.

Systems can be shipped same day, and air freight requests are no problem.

IMSI is there to support you.

IMSI supports its equipment with a staff of field technicians and trainers that can help your people get started quickly. Our weld engineering design consultants can also help you in planning or bidding a project based on our experience on related projects.

How the IMSI rental welding systems are different:

  • Pulsed, spray-arc welding process--high deposit rates/low base metal heat input (reduced distortion)
  • Deposition rates are 4x stick, 2x standard MIG
  • Field ready-built to be more reliable than "off the shelf" MIG systems
  • Pre-programmed specifically for applications
  • Proprietary electronics and control software that allows for welder ease and "out-of-position" welding
  • Better weld results--excellent penetration/fusion characteristics with excellent bead appearance
  • Better weld through rusty and painted surfaces

The bottom line: IMSI systems are cheaper, faster and better.

IMSI systems are a complete package.

  • Power supply that produces peak operating current of 550 AMPs with dimensions of 24" deep x 14" high x 10" wide
  • Customized wire feed suitcase that can run up to 200' from the power supply with self-contained gas regulating system
  • The power supplies arrive on a portable cart that is approximately 4' tall and can be easily moved around
  • 220V or 480V power requirements options
  • Extensive application and welding knowledge to get you started efficiently
  • In-depth training provided when requested
  • If something goes wrong, IMSI will replace equipment or provide assistance within 24 hours
  • Large inventory of rental equipment to allow for additional job needs or prompt replacement

Case studies

A Major Midwestern Utility Boiler Padding

A major Midwestern utility was concerned about the erosion of its boiler tubes due to the burning of Western coal. Their objective was to pad weld 190 square feet in less than three weeks, using ER80B2 (80,000 tensile strength) wire on boiler tubes to achieve a wear resistant surface that would prolong the life of the tubes for 10+ years. There were some major constraints for this project, including:

  • Short window of time to accomplish an extensive amount of pad welding
  • Lack of available welders
  • Thin tubes upon which to pad weld

The decision to use the IMSI process was seen as a way to meet the utility plant's objectives.

IMSI supplied three 4500 XL Pulsed Arc units which were utilized over a three week period with seven shifts, ten hours per shift. Approximately 575 pounds of weld wire were applied. Computer data "dumped" from the welding machines' computer memory indicated that the average Power-On-Time for each unit was 208 hours. Due to considerable movement throughout the boiler to perform the welding in different areas, Arc-On-Time was not quite as high as it could have been. Arc-On-Time averaged 38 hours per unit. The percentage of Arc-On-Time was 18%. Welders were able to pad weld approximately 190 square feet during this period. The welders were able to apply 5.04 pounds of weld metal per hour. It is estimated that for this job the productivity over stick welding was by a factor of three times.

This project was a perfect example of how IMSI Pulse Arc Welding was able to help a major utility company meet their schedule, increase their productivity, eliminate excessive down time, and save money. Before the job, the plant manager commented, "…the rental price is 'Chump change' if it can help accomplish all this work on schedule." After the job

the welding supervisory personnel commented that, "…the complaint was that it (IMSI Pulsed Arc) worked too well…. It didn't give the welder an excuse for regular breaks!"

Since this project, this utility company has used IMSI Pulse Arc welding for four more projects.

Membrane Welding at an East Coast Utility

"For the last four years, we have specified IMSI equipment for the membrane welding of our boilers. The membrane material was predominately 2 ¼ chrome and 1 ½ molly, and was welded vertical down. We realized a 42% reduction in construction costs."

Iconel Wallpaper Welding at a Philadelphia Oil Refinery

A Philadelphia area refinery required the welding of 1/8" IN-625 sheets on the inside of a vacuum tower. Over 25,000 square feet of cladding material was seal welded and plug welded in two weeks. The contractor estimated that welding time was reduced by a factor of three over SMAW.

Blast Furnace Reline at a Midwest Steel Mill

11,000 pounds of high deposition wire was used to reline a blast furnace. Welding was completed on an accelerated schedule in just one and one half months. All the joints were ultrasonically inspected, and only one three-inch section was replaced. Estimated savings were about 10 dollars per pound of weld metal in overall costs.
